Thanks to the leadership of Rev. Maggie Oman Shannon, I had the honor of presenting and affixing mezuzot at the Unity Spiritual Center in San Francisco on Sunday, April 10th, 2016– and I am still walking on air. Some of the people who attended the service had never heard of the mezuzah before my presentation. Others had seen them because they grew up in a Jewish neighborhood, have jewish friends, or are Jewish themselves. One person even had one on her house, but didn’t know what it was. But the meaning behind the this powerful spiritual tradition had never really been explained to them in depth. My spirit’s ultimate delight was fullfilled on that day when I was able to share this important teaching.
My talk was 20 minutes long. Then we headed out to the front door to say the prayer and affix a mezuzah to the front doorpost. We then went inside and put one on the sanctuary doorpost. This all happened so fast. I wished I had taken more time to revel in the moment and maybe say a few more prayers. I was thrilled, and caught up in the moment. Things to think about for next time.
First we thank God for commanding us to affix mezuzot.
Then I nailed it up. I asked everyone to enter with their right foot first.
We wrapped up with snacks and a mezuzah sale. Many people, some of whom had just learned about them that day, came home with mezuzot to put on their doorposts. When we share our beautiful teachings, everyone wins. I pray that I will be able to do this presentation again and again to many spiritual/religious, Interfaith and Unity communities. It was truly a dream come true!
