The Blacksmith and the Artist – Closer to the Heart

I have had the honor of founding the copper arts program at San Francisco Waldorf High School. for the last 12 years. Last year, I won a grant to create an ‘outdoor classroom’ just outside my regular classroom that is specifically designed for forging steel. Learning to work with the elements is an important part of Waldorf education. While the goal is not to create tradesmiths in the field of Blacksmithing, rather it is to get the kids outside, moving hot metal with hammers, overcoming their inherant fears and creating useful objects– completely ‘in the moment.’
