BRINGING ROSH HASHANAH TO THE UNITY SPIRITUAL CENTER WITH SIGNS AND WONDERS

Over the past ten years or so, I have been working in partnership with the Unity Spiritual Center San Francisco to bring Jewish teachings, creative art and Judaica into their space.  Every few years I have been invited to speak about such topics as:  the mezuzah, my art and ideas, or the High Holy Days.

Pre-COVID I was asked to design and create a copper sign for their steeple.  The Center is celebrating their 75th Anniversary and asked if I would produce something that commemorated their anniversary, while encompassing the theme of the events: Oceans of Love.  They loved the design so much, they decided to use it for their new logo.

Here’s a pencil drawing of the design– for the 4′ x 4′ copper disk steeple sign.  The white space will be cut out (negative space), and the dark space is the copper.   Below this image, is the new logo.  The logo was designed in partnership with Ralph Sinick.

After many delays, we are finally excited to announce that the sign will be affixed this month!  We are going to celebrate on September 25th, 2022, at 11 am  (Erev – Rosh Hashanah morning) where we will unveil the sign, and I will share traditions, customs, and foods related to Rosh Hashanah and the High Holy Days.  It is particularly meaningful to me, as a long-time interfaith advocate,  to be able to share Judaism with a wider audience.  If you would like to join us, the address is:

Unity Spiritual Center

Here are a few words about our work together and celebrating Rosh Hashanah from interim minister Gerry Brague:

“We at Unity Spiritual Center of San Francisco are very excited about installing and dedicating Aimee Golant’s artwork on our steeple, especially falling as it does at Rosh Hashanah. As we have just celebrated our 75th anniversary as a congregation, we appreciate the intersection with this start of a new year as we embrace the beauty of Aimee’s sculpture. It is especially fitting for us as we are in wholehearted acceptance of the truths of many spiritual traditions and are happy to include this in our annual high holy days commemoration.”

I have also designed a series of commemorative medallions which will be sold on my website through December 1st, 2022 with 50% net proceeds going to the Center, in honor of the Anniversary and Emeritus Minister Maggie Oman Shannon.  Here’s one of the pieces in pewter ($75).  Bronze ($150) and Silver ($250) are also available.

Please join us– in celebrating Oceans of Love!
